260 memories - 1 moment
Memory, a captivating phenomenon, allows us to recall past moments and guide our present decisions. In my work, “Memory,” fabric scraps from previous upholstery projects represent the intricate network of experiences that shape our memories. Sewn together, these scraps form a tapestry of diverse origins and life experiences, such as a vintage jacket lining from Japan, a canvas tent from WWII, and a U.S. Mailbag.

After assembling the fragments, they’re cut into 20” x 20” squares and quilted separately. The quilted panels are over dyed charcoal and stone washed for an hour. Seamed together, they form a 10’ x 10’ tapestry. Beeswax is melted into the canvas, and the piece is pressed with a hot iron. Seams are opened, stuffed with cotton batting, and hand sewn back together.

For many years, I naively assumed that many people shared my thoughts, disregarding the profound impact of diverse life experiences on shaping worldviews. Now, I relish the opportunity to ask questions and learn from each individual I encounter, fostering a genuine desire to understand their perspectives.
Memory is a complex and intricate tapestry of experiences that we can reflect upon, revealing the interconnectedness of our lives. Each fragment of our memory contributes to the formation of our unique worldview, shaping the way we perceive and understand the world around us.
