→ Throne
When starting a project, I intentionally don’t have everything figured out beforehand. I view creating as an act of faith, with small bursts of excitement when handling materials, sketching, or sculpting. I imagine a match igniting a candle, revealing the next steps. This approach is exhilarating as I learn to solve the problems I create.
Making this chair was humorous, because after 14 years of designing functional furniture, I created something that is not meant to be sat on. I knew this going in, but it wasn’t until late working on the concrete layering that I questioned its purpose. Overwhelmed, I thought, “He is seated on the Throne.”
This object now held significance beyond my intention. It reminded me that the battle has been won, and Jesus is seated on the Throne and will be returning. Thinking about this chair as a Throne allowed me to meditate on His second coming, imagining Him in the room with me. Once this meaning emerged, I imagined Jesus sitting, and in my humbled state, I bowed before Him. He then to my surprise invited me to take a seat, saying, “It’s comfortable, see for yourself.” This felt like a gift, reminding me that our creator allows us to create. The humility of extending (what I can only imagine is) God’s favorite activity to us so that in the process we could know Him more intimately.
I enjoy meditating this way, exploring God’s connectivity through imagination and creativity. I’m grateful for this chair and excited to see where this new material process leads me.
